The clicking sound without ignition frustrates homeowners and often has straightforward causes. Before calling for service, check these common issues that you may be able to resolve yourself.

Moisture is the most common culprit. Recent cooking with boiling water, cleaning, or even Arizona's monsoon humidity can dampen igniter components. The igniter clicks but cannot generate a spark strong enough to light the gas.

Remove burner caps and heads and dry them thoroughly. Use a clean towel to absorb visible moisture. A hairdryer on low heat can accelerate drying. Allow components to air dry for several hours before attempting to light.

Debris in the igniter gap prevents proper spark generation. Food particles, grease, and hard water deposits accumulate over time. Use a soft brush to clean around the igniter without damaging the electrode.

Clogged burner ports prevent gas from reaching the spark. Examine the burner head for blocked holes. A straight pin can clear individual ports. Never use wooden toothpicks that can break off and create additional blockages.

Misaligned burner caps cause uneven gas distribution. Ensure caps are seated properly after cleaning or removing for any reason. Crooked or improperly seated caps prevent gas from igniting evenly.

If one burner lights while others click without igniting, compare the working and non-working burners. Often the issue is specific to components you can clean or adjust.

Continuous clicking across all burners may indicate an igniter module problem. This electronic component generates sparks for all burners simultaneously. Module replacement requires professional service.

Gas supply issues occasionally present as ignition problems. Verify other gas appliances work normally. If nothing lights, the issue may be with your gas supply rather than the range.

Professional ranges with electronic ignition feature safety systems that prevent gas flow until proper ignition is detected. When these systems malfunction, they may click without allowing gas release.
