A freezer that is not maintaining temperature requires urgent attention. Frozen food begins thawing quickly once temperatures rise above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Quick diagnosis can save your food and potentially avoid expensive repairs.

Check the temperature setting first. Verify the thermostat is set correctly. Freezers should maintain 0 degrees Fahrenheit or slightly below. Settings sometimes get changed accidentally.

Examine door seals for gaps. Close the door on a dollar bill and try to pull it out. Resistance indicates a good seal. If the bill slides freely, warm air is entering. In Arizona's extreme heat, even small seal gaps cause significant temperature problems.

Assess frost buildup. Excessive frost on the evaporator coils insulates them from the air, preventing proper cooling. If you see heavy frost, the defrost system may have failed. Manual defrosting provides temporary relief while you schedule repair.

Listen for the compressor. A silent compressor might indicate failure, a relay problem, or a thermostat issue. If you hear clicking without the compressor starting, the starting relay likely needs replacement.

Feel the condenser coils. Located at the back or bottom of your freezer, these coils should be warm when the compressor runs. Hot coils suggest the system is overworking. Cold coils when the compressor is running indicate refrigerant problems.

Verify adequate ventilation clearance. Freezers need airflow around the condenser. Built-in units need proper installation; standalone units need several inches of clearance from walls.

Check the evaporator fan. Open the freezer and listen for the fan running. This fan circulates cold air. If it is not running, temperatures rise even with a functional cooling system.

Consider ambient temperature. Freezers in Arizona garages face extreme conditions. Summer garage temperatures can exceed what the freezer can overcome. Garage-rated units handle extreme ambients better.

If your freezer is connected to a refrigerator, verify the refrigerator compartment temperature. In many systems, cold air flows from freezer to refrigerator. Blocked vents can trap cold air in one compartment.
